An apartment is a single home unit, part of a larger apartment or residential building, that is rented. If the unit is not rented, meaning that the owner is using it to live in it, then the unit is called a condo.
Condos or apartments are generally considered to be individual units within an apartment complex, or, more rarely, standalone units. When owned and lived in by the owner, these residential units are called condos, and when rented to a third party individual or group, they are called apartments.
