According to others, the bear market received its name from an adage that you shouldn't sell a bear's skin before you catch the animal. Some people think the phrase comes from the way a bear swipes its paws downward to attack its prey.

A bear market can be caused by a variety of factors, but in general, they include a weak, halting, or sluggish economy, bursting market bubbles, pandemics, wars, geopolitical crises, and significant economic paradigm shifts, such as the move to an online economy. Low employment, low discretionary income, weak productivity, and a reduction in corporate earnings are typical indicators of a weak or deteriorating economy. A bear market can also be started by any government intervention in the economy.
